{"id":27789,"date":"2024-08-01T08:52:56","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T08:52:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quickbirdmedical.com\/?post_type=news&#038;p=27789"},"modified":"2026-09-03T14:00:41","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T14:00:41","slug":"mdd-to-mdr-end-transition-period","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/quickbirdmedical.com\/en\/news\/mdd-to-mdr-end-transition-period\/","title":{"rendered":"From MDD to MDR: End of the Transition Period on May 26, 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Medical Device Regulation<\/strong> (MDR) is slowly but surely replacing the previously applicable Medical Device Directive (MDD).<\/p>\n<p>Provided manufacturers meet various criteria (for example, having submitted a <strong>transition plan by May 26, 2024<\/strong>), the deadline is <strong>extended<\/strong>, depending on the risk class. By <strong>September 2024<\/strong>, a contractual <strong>agreement on implementation<\/strong> with a <strong>notified body<\/strong> must also have been concluded.<\/p>\n<p>For medical devices with an MDD certificate or a declaration of conformity issued before May 26, 2021, the <strong>transition period is extended as follows<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>May 26, 2026:<\/strong> custom-made implantable medical devices (class III)<\/li>\n<li><strong>December 31, 2027:<\/strong> higher-risk medical devices (non-exempt class IIb implants and class III medical devices)<\/li>\n<li><strong>December 31, 2028:<\/strong> lower-risk medical devices (class IIa, Ir, Im, Is) and products that only require a notified body for conformity assessment under the MDR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"last-child\">The extension of the deadline was agreed in March of last year to give manufacturers more time to transfer their existing products to the MDR. The reason: <strong>because of a shortage of notified bodies<\/strong>, (rapid) <strong>certification<\/strong> under the MDR by the end of the deadline <strong>could not be guaranteed for all medical
