Platform for the Largest Swiss Cannabis Pilot Study

Pilotversuche.ch is the central online platform for organizing and conducting the largest cannabis study in Switzerland. It enables a complete onboarding process for study participants, ranging from the collection of entry questionnaires to the collection of all relevant data (health, personal, etc.) and the preparation and planning of an intake interview.
The platform supports the randomization and allocation of study groups, taking into account factors such as location and social contacts.
It also monitors participants’ consumption and offers a comprehensive harm reduction module with podcasts, a consumption diary and a self-monitoring module.
Challenge
The development of the platform required the seamless integration of POS systems, compliance software, store systems, payment service providers and online calendars to ensure a smooth process and data exchange between the various components.
One of the biggest challenges was to ensure the anonymization of the participant data. At the same time, measures had to be implemented to control and prevent misuse in order to ensure the integrity of the study.
Process
In close cooperation with study organizers and scientists from the participating universities, a holistic, user-friendly design was created with a focus on a functional and intuitive interface that optimally implements the specific requirements and system integrations of the study.
QuickBird Medical has developed the platform in accordance with the highest data protection and data security requirements. This ensures that the study participants’ data can be reliably and securely recorded, stored and assigned.
Result
QuickBird Medical has successfully implemented and launched the “Pilotversuche.ch” study platform together with Swiss Cannabis Research. The software now serves as the central hub for the largest cannabis pilot study in Switzerland. The pilot project involves several thousand participants and serves as a basis for future studies in Switzerland, which can build on the knowledge and experience gained. The study started in May 2024 and is scheduled to run for five years.

Online surveys are conducted by the independent research team 6, 12, 24 and 48 months after the start of the study. In addition, all participants will be invited to participate in regular health status surveys via the platform. The first interim results of the study can therefore be expected in 2025 at the earliest.
