Summary

Combyn BioCore Loop

Combyn BioCore Loop is a standalone health terminal for cardiovascular screenings. The hardware device enables users to independently measure medically relevant health data. By combining ECG measurement with bioelectrical impedance analysis, it provides a comprehensive view of cardiovascular health. The solution delivers medically relevant data right where people are: in pharmacies, gyms, and offices.

To this end, QuickBird Medical developed software for four different components: an embedded system for signal processing, a display interface for the hardware, the server backend, and the web interface.

More Information

Challenge

The development of the autonomous terminal required the design of a secure software architecture for a complex hardware system. Several medical measuring instruments had to be precisely controlled in order to reliably collect and analyze various cardiovascular health data.

Added to this was the regulatory requirement: As a Class IIa medical device under the MDR, all software had to be developed in accordance with IEC 62304 (Safety Class B).

Process

To meet these requirements, QuickBird Medical developed a modular software architecture that connects all system components.

An embedded system (known as the Local Processing Module) directly controls the hardware, processes sensor data within the device, and displays the measurement results on the built-in display.

At the same time, a backend system was developed to process the collected measurement data, generate health reports, and make them available for display in the web interface. An integrated payment system manages user access and links the results to user accounts.

Our implementation utilized our ISO 13485-certified quality management system, in compliance with IEC 62304 and cybersecurity standards. Data security and regulatory compliance were our top priorities throughout the process.

Result

The result is a secure, regulatory-compliant software solution for an autonomous terminal in which hardware control, data processing, and the digital platform work together seamlessly. The solution enables an end-to-end digital workflow, from measurement to a personalized health report. This makes a complex cardiovascular health check accessible for the first time in a way that allows it to be reliably performed without the need for medical professionals.

Bernhard Schlichtner, Combyn Helathcare

“QuickBird Medical developed the embedded software for our medical device. The entire project process—from the initial discussions through to the first release-ready version—was executed flawlessly. This included the development of the local device software with various interfaces, as well as a cloud solution and a web application for our end users. I would particularly like to highlight the structured approach and the close coordination throughout all project phases. We are very satisfied with the result and can wholeheartedly recommend QuickBird.”

Future

The next milestone is to obtain Class IIa medical device approval under the MDR. The system is currently undergoing the relevant regulatory approval process.
